For awhile, we even cried out that SEO was dead. And in a way, we kind of hoped it was true! What really happened was Google said enough with the non-sense. The things people were doing to improve their search engine rankings were completely unnatural, and were degrading the quality of search results. What Google wants us to do is provide quality content at a reasonable frequency. They expect us to include relevant keywords, and anticipate the use of similar words or phrases (Google calls these related keywords “Latent Semantic Indexing” or LSI Keywords) to naturally express our messages.
